Skimmington Castle

I haven't been to this pub for years, but it was lovely going there for lunch. It's a tricky place to find, but as long as you use a sat nav you'll be fine. The people serving were very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious! It's good pricing and definitely worth the money!

Second Awful Experience ! This used to be my favourite place and my go-to for pub food, but my recent visit was utterly disappointing — and sadly, this isn’t the first time. About 6 weeks ago, I had another bad experience at the same restaurant, which I decided to overlook, hoping it was just an off day. Unfortunately, this visit was even worse. Service was chaotic and unprofessional. After ordering drinks and starters, we were only then told that several mains were unavailable. The table wasn’t cleared after starters, and our cutlery wasn’t refreshed. We even had to go up to the counter ourselves to order because of how long it was taking for anyone to attend to us. When we finally managed to order, more items were unavailable. We settled for burgers and fish & chips, which took around 40 minutes to arrive. The chips tasted old and over-fried, my chicken burger was burnt and dry, and the beef burger was overcooked, dry inside, and served in a stale bun. When I mentioned this, the staff offered to make a new burger, but the service was already so slow that it didn’t seem worth the wait. The man at the till was defensive and dismissive, insisting that someone had checked on us instead of actually listening to our concerns. This was by far the worst dining experience I’ve had — poor service, terrible food, and no sense of care from the staff. I would like to be contacted by management regarding this visit, especially since this is the second bad experience in just four weeks. I hope this feedback is taken seriously, as it’s very disappointing to see such a decline in a place that used to be one of my favourites.

I and my friends had a great lunch, lovely food and great service. Cathy was exceptional in her manner . Nothing was too much trouble for her and they were very busy. She stayed calm and delivered with a smile. I am a hospitality manager and can understand how hard it can be. Thank you for great afternoon.

I think they were having an off day. We ordered three apple juices but they only had two left. We ordered our main meal and were told that the vegetables would be broccoli and carrots. Two of our meals arrived after 25 minutes with no comment made about the third meal. I checked five minutes later to find that it was on its way. No offer of condiments to go with a meal was made to the other two guests and I had to go and ask. When the final meal arrived. There were no carrots but no comment was made and we didn’t know if they’ve just been left off. I checked and it turned out that there were no carrots.. I tucked into my chicken and leek pie only to find it contained ham. I pointed this out to the waiting staff and they apologised. It was kind of them to take the cost of my meal off of the final bill,. They had offered to replace the meal with something else but having waited half an hour I didn’t want to have to wait for a new order. We looked at the desert menu having been told that one of the items on offer had run out. We’ve eaten at Skimmington Castle before and had a wonderful meal with wonderful service however we were somewhat disappointed on this occasion and doubt that we will be back.

A lovely little pub with incredibly friendly service and great food.

The roast dinner was lovely and we were so excited to see butterscotch tart back on the menu. We, however, we were extremely disappointed with what was served. It was nothing like the butterscotch tart you used to serve or we have found elsewhere. It didn’t look particularly appetising, it was so dark and heavy. Please bring back proper butterscotch tart. As usual the staff were helpful and friendly.

Great pub with great food, good service and quality drinks. Was really impressed. Dog friendly and ideally placed for several dog-walk routes. We shall be visiting more frequently in future. Love the huge log fire too.
